Your decision to home school your special needs child is based on love and the individual care that you want to provide for your child.
No matter how much work or sacrifice it may require. Nothing can be as hard as handing your special needs child over to someone else, every day, and hoping theyll understand his or her needs.
Perhaps you tried the public education system and have decided it was not what you had hoped for.
Or maybe you have decided from day one to home school.
Your decision is made
Your decision will lead you, both down a path filled with discovery and success.
Home schooling a special needs child allows your child to spend their days in an environment of acceptance.
You understand their needs, actions and struggles. As a parent you dont laugh, tease or segregate. You simple love and teach him.
When social interaction is inappropriate, youre able to rewind and replay the appropriate outcome, all in an atmosphere of love and acceptance.
You understand your childs needs and strengths and can structure the learning activities to their level and abilities.
Your child comes first
Public schools do try to include, teach and meet the needs of children with special needs.
However the unending budget cuts, staffing changes and overcrowded classrooms can make meeting the needs of special needs children very difficult.
Home schooling an ADHD child, an autistic child or a learning disabled child will mean a commitment on your part as a parent and as their appointed teacher. You will need to stay focused on the task at hand while being sensitive to the special needs.
Enjoy your journey, find joy in the moments you share with your child and most of all celebrate the successes every day.
