Classical Home Schooling

Classical home schooling finds its roots in the trivium, which is comprised of the three subjects taught first, grammar, logic, and rhetoric.

This approach to education is the same one that produced many of history’s greatest scholars and artists. Socrates, Leonardo DaVinci, Shakespeare and countless others were classically educated.

Many parents choose this approach because of its promises to not only educate a child, but to produce a successful human being.

Becoming successful is not simply about learning new information. It is about using information in creative, beneficial ways.

Three steps to success

The trivium is a three-step approach to education that mirrors the child's cognitive stage of development.

The first stage is referred to as the Grammar stage. Similar to or elementary education it lasts until a child is approximately 12 years of age.

During this time young children memorize important information. Cognitively, children at that young age are able to take in great amounts of new information and store it for later use.

The second stage of classical home schooling is referred to as the Dialectic stage. During this phase students are at a high school age. This is where children learn to reason. By questioning what they learned during the grammar stage, children develop logical thinking skills.

The third stage, the Rhetoric stage develops communication and expression. Facts and the ability to think logically are now expressed in a compelling manner.
