Learning Process Part 4

The final area that has a huge effect on learning is Processing Speed.

Essentially what is happening is the child is trying to retrieve files but is very slow. The paths are not well defined.

Learning Process Part 4Let’s break down an everyday addition lesson.

Mother: “What is 4 plus 6?”

Child: says nothing –

Mother: (interprets this as the child didn’t hear me, so she repeats the question) “What is 4 plus 6?”

Child: says nothing again

Mother: comes up with a brilliant idea and grabs some blocks. She puts 4 red ones and 6 blue ones in front of the child and says … “What is 4 plus 6?”

Child: says nothing again –

Mother: Rather frustrated says, “4 plus 6 equals 10!!!!!”

Now let’s look at the child’s experience which is rather different

Mother: “What is 4 plus 6?”

Child: says nothing – trying to picture 4 in their head plus means that the number is getting bigger so I am adding six …

Mother: (interrupting the thinking that is going on repeats the question) “What is 4 plus 6?”

Child: OH!! man I almost had it and no I have to start again. OK. 4 and the child starts again …

Mother: bringing blocks into view completely distracting the child says again “What is 4 plus 6?”

Child: says nothing again, totally frustrated and lost because every time he started to process the question he was interrupted which caused them to have to start again.

The best thing you can give a child with a processing disorder is TIME

RULE: When you ask a question or make a statement count to 9 before you say or do anything else. And count slowly!

Some children, depending on their level of difficulty will need you to count to 20. The more severe the impairment the longer you should give them to process the information.

Remember that processing involves all aspects of life not just schoolwork. When you ask him to turn off the TV, it will take him a few second to process that request. Don’t immediately repeat the request. He is not ignoring you he is processing.

Summary

In no way has this been designed to be an in-depth breakdown of every possible learning problem that a child could experience.

Hopefully it has given you a better understanding of the process of learning and how to identify an area of difficulty.

Every child is unique and has a unique pattern of learning.

It’s amazing that when one is given a deficit it usually is accompanied by another type of strength.

Read about multiple intelligences to find additional information on your child’s strength and how to begin the process of building on it.
