Learning Process Part 2

The more they do these exercises, the more defined the file paths get.

Imagine you have to walk from Point A to Point B in a maze.

Learning Process Part 2You no doubt will back track, get turned around, and go out of your way.

But if you have to walk through that maze every day, you would eventually figure out the best route and wear a visible path. Once that path is worn you can do it in no time.

It is the same with learning. Children will create these paths in their brain and the more they are used the quicker they get it.

Use all Your Senses

Sometimes, it is just a matter of slowing down and giving them extra time to work through the files.

Other times, they need something more.

When one of our senses is not creating a path, the other senses can come in and help.

If you are talking and talking and talking and your child is not getting it, try incorporating the other senses.

Teaching the letter “A” usually involves a card with the letters “Aa”.

You hold up the card and say “A”, the child repeats.

You look at books and point to “A” or a. No mater how many different A’s you point to they just aren’t getting it.

Now add the other senses to come in and help:

  • get out the play dough and shape the letter “A”
  • cut the letters out of sand paper and trace them with fingers
  • cut Apples into A’s and then eat them

This may seem ridiculous but by doing all these other things you are creating better files with more defined paths.

Pizza Anyone

If your child is older and struggling with equivalent fractions and they have been staring at the book and looking at “½ = ¼ + ¼” but they just don’t understand.

Try this, make pizza for dinner and cut it in different fractions.

Give one child ¼ and the other child 2 pieces that are 1/8 each.

You see, for some children, the real life example that has smell, taste and texture helps build those files and paths better.

If you are one of those people who grasp things easily and never had trouble with these things you probably are thinking: “Why can’t I just draw a picture of pizza and cut it up? That should be the same thing.”

My answer to that would: ”Eat your drawing for dinner and see how that works for you!”

What you need to understand is for some children, there is great power in using all of their senses.

For a graphical representation designed to assist you in understanding areas your child may be struggling in and, what you can do to help, see the Learning Processes Chart.
