Which Home School Curriculum

Should I use a full curriculum or compile my own? The full curriculums seem very expensive

More and more people are opting to use the full curriculums, especially if they are new to Home Schooling. The benefit of the prepackaged curriculum is they include the appropriate and complete skills required at each level.

You may think they are expensive, but be careful. Developing your own curriculum usually means purchasing many small support books and resources that will quickly add up.

For example, the LIFPAC curriculum for a grade 2 student would cost less than $250.00 for the year. The majority of the cost can be reused for other children in following years.

Compare that to developing your own curriculum, which would involve everything from:

  • developing a guide, so you know what you are doing,
  • individual subject books,
  • individual resources to support the subjects,
  • probably a Language Arts/reading program,
  • worksheet activity books
  • and others

It would be very easy to spend $500.00 trying to put it all together.

In the end, you have to look at the amount of time you spend putting the pieces together. Many people find the time is better spent teaching the children.

There is also the option of purchasing second hand. Many local organizations or online sites can help you find the appropriate curriculums.
