Why home school?

What are the overall benefits of home schooling?

The answers are varied but they stem from one central belief; that ‘I can do a better job of preparing my child for life’. This may be motivated by religious beliefs, medical needs or simply by a dissatisfaction of the traditional school system.

Whatever the reasons, more and more parents are choosing home schooling rather than traditional schooling; the benefit of home schooling is found when your child is able to succeed in life and you know you had something to do with those accomplishments.

Positive aspects of home schooling

Home schooling is legal in most countries, however, there have been and still are many controversies on the issue of whether or not the child is benefiting from this approach.

Parents are taking up home schooling, for many reasons:

• Having mentally or physically challenged children who they feel are not being adequately served by the traditional system
• Parents desire to have direct input over what their child is studying
• Parents control the safety of the child at all times
• A single parent, working from the home, sometimes finds it more convenient to provide home instruction

One major benefit of home schooling, which every parent will agree, is the satisfaction one has when their child is successful.

Home schooling allows parents to put as much effort as they desire into ensuring their child obtains that success.

Additional benefits

There are a few other benefits of home schooling worth mentioning:

• The bonding between child and parent that is lost when the child goes away to school
• The joy of sharing the leaning experience with your child each day
• The end results for which you are directly responsible

Disadvantages of home schooling

While the benefits of home schooling may be motivating there are also some disadvantages to take into consideration:

• The child has reduced opportunities to interact with peers
• Parents are unable to do a good job of the teacher role due to a lack of knowledge or teaching ability
• Parent must be committed to the additional work of preparing and teaching lessons

Whether or not the benefits outweigh the disadvantages is a personal matter

For some, the benefit of home schooling is great and worth the price that must be paid. For those that are against home schooling, the only way to decide is to gather more information.

Weigh the information carefully to see if the benefit of home schooling is worth the price you will have to pay.
