Social and emotional development is strongly influenced by ones experiences and surroundings. The child who’s been home schooled their entire life, may have limited interactions with peers and may likely be shy and withdrawn around strangers.

Individuals who are against home schooling feel that regular schools give children lots of opportunity to interact with peers. Through sports teams, interest clubs and regular day to day classes children learn the skills of getting along with others.

For several home schooled children, their opportunities for making new friends are limited. This is primarily due to a lack of exposure and, in many cases, home schooled children that have siblings, find that they become their closest friends.

Regular school curriculum is governed by the state and delivered by qualified teachers. People that are against home schooling, state that parents cannot present their children with the equivalent level of academic opportunity and stability.

Curriculum choice - another point of contention for those against home schooling

Some People are against home schooling, because they consider the matter of real-life comprehension, as a major reason why children should not be home schooled. Within the regular school system, aside from offering instruction, regarding academic matters, the system provides ample opportunity for children to make friends, to join clubs to deal with life issues.

Parents who home school their children, may be able to teach subject matter or curriculums, but that is only half the picture. Can they duplicate the recess experience and socialization skills required to join in a game?

Common sense learning … from the media, from one person or from various individuals

Biased opinions may be formed by allowing children to access the outside world while watching television or reading news newspapers. On the other hand, teachers are familiar with this, and instill children with much needed skills to rationalize social truths on their own.

Then there are those who are against home schooling, dispute that parents teaching their children only offer one opinion and thus children are never exposed to different ideas and point of view.

Socialization reasons are conceivably the most widespread reason why some people are against home schooling. That can not be denied. But whether we like it or not, home schooling is a option made for the children, by the parents, with their best interest at heart.

So who should have the final say …

It could be argued, from the stand point of the children, that perhaps parents should not have this final choice ... even if they do go the free home schooling route. So who should have the final say, as to whether or not to home school a child?

In the end, it’s the children’s quality of overall education that really matters. Then perhaps one day, former home schooled and regular schooled adults will come up with a deciding answer to which system is best for the children … for or against home schooling.
