The online home schooling curriculum is as varied as the children they are designed to educate. So how do you decide which one is right for you?

The online curriculum can be found as either Christian or secular. Unless it specifically states that it is Christian, it should be assumed it is not based on Christianity.

It is worth stating that one is not better than the other. Both are important in that they fill the needs of a family.

The Christian curriculums are generally rooted in the belief that Christ is the central focus of all things, including education. So, the Christian approach of online home schooling curriculum has Jesus Christ very much present in the curriculum.

In addition to math, physics and English reading, the children learn aspects of the Bible and Christian characters. Even subjects like life science, physical science and earth science are described in the Christian home schooling curriculum as “Discovering God’s Creation”. The music class has subjects such as the history of Christian music.

On the other hand, Secular curriculums are based on the belief that education is simply a necessity of every child. They deliberately exclude God and any Christian doctrine from their curriculum.

Both approaches are available on the Internet. The decision is, which one is right for you and your child.

Online home schooling curriculum

Computers and the Internet play a major role as far as it is considered. It has been proven that children learn more by doing and exploring, rather than going through the boring textbooks. As Confucius said,

"I see and I forget. I hear and I remember. I do and I understand."

It allows children to learn concepts through interactive lessons. These lessons would present a concept, show examples, break down and teach the individual aspects and finally allow the child to practice the skill just learned.

Many curriculums come with worksheet follow-up activities that can be incorporated into the home school program. A final evaluation of the mastery of each skill would be included at the end of every chapter or section.

Another method that an online home schooling technique can help, is to link students in geographical areas. For example, with one online home school curriculum, children were asked to gather in a local library.

From that location, they studied real life uses of the decimal system, and alphabetical order. Not only was it more interesting than a worksheet, it was easier to understand.

This type of activity also allows them to interact with children of the same ages. It allows them to imagine, create, ponder, and integrate all that they are learning into their own framework.
